Bentonite - S400/ CE2

Bentonites are deposits of special clay minerals; these clay minerals are usually in the form of calcium-rich minerals. Characteristic of clay minerals is their platelet structure; this structure allows bentonite to swell, enabling it to achieve a high moisture-binding capacity. By activating calcium bentonites with sodium, moisture binding can be trebled. The swelling clay mineral content is also called the smectite content. A good bentonite has a smectite content of at least 80-85%.

The main function of bentonites is to improve the soil's moisture-holding capacity, particularly in very dry sandy soils. Bentonite has a long-term effect, so a soil enriched with bentonite will retain moisture better after every dry period.

Another use of bentonite is the creation of a compacted layer which can be used, for example, to create natural ponds; bentonite prevents water seepage into the subsoil. This requires a specific method of application about which we are happy to advise.
