RAMBO stands for Reduction of Ammonia through Source-Oriented and Flanking Solutions. The project aims to develop measures and techniques that will enable pig and poultry farmers to significantly reduce their ammonia emissions. The project looks at improvements in nutrition, housing, barn climate and management, among other things.
Ammonia emissions make up a significant portion of air pollution. Pig and poultry farmers in the border region will have a very strict emission standard imposed on them in the coming years regarding ammonia emissions. This presents the livestock industry with a major challenge. The RAMBO project is looking for innovative measures and techniques that will enable pig and poultry farmers to significantly reduce their ammonia emissions.
The project aims to support livestock farmers with traditional, or non-ammonia low emission barns, in implementing the measures imposed. Certain techniques will also be interesting to apply additionally in low ammonia emission barns.
1. Setting up test - & demolocations for monitoring ammonia emissions and researching improvements in nutrition, housing, barn climate, management and other emissions such as odor and methane.
Side effects such as methane, animal health and welfare are also considered. Several test and demo sites in the border region will be opened up as model farms offering inspiration to others.
2. Engage farmers to the maximum to ensure that the solutions studied are feasible. RAMBO will share the best techniques and provide livestock farmers with the right knowledge and tools to reduce ammonia themselves.
The project envisions several workshops, demonstrations and open days, as well as individual coaching for livestock farmers.
The project supports the EU Farm to Fork strategy by contributing to reducing the impact of agriculture on the environment and the Zero Pollution Action Plan by helping to address air pollution that threatens biodiversity.
